BASIC SKILLS COACHES: Garden City FSC is looking for coaches who are interested in teaching Basic Skills. (Freestyle, Figures, Moves in the Field, Conditioning, Creative Stroking) Choreographed programs for competitive skaters taking them to local competitions all the way up to Nationals. Choreographed programs for ice shows, Christmas exhibition, etc. Attended USFS & PSA Seminars Held Training Seminars for Skaters Experience includes Director of Basic Skills “Learn to Skate” Program Currently coaching all levels. I find it rewarding to teach a beginner new skills or an advanced skater triple jumps. I enjoy seeing skaters learn new skills and watch their love of skating grow. Karen Fitzgerald Karen has been a coach at GCFSC since 2002. She gives private lessons to children and adults. Her students range from Basic Skills level to US Figure Skating competitive track skaters to hockey players, and recreational skaters. She teaches Basic Skills classes in addition to creative stroking classes, as well as on and off-ice conditioning. She has been a competitive adult skater who has medaled in 2 Adult National Competitions. She has passed the Adult Silver Freestyle, Adult Gold Moves in the Field, standard track Novice Moves in the Field, Pre- Silver Dance and First test Figures tests. She continues to skate in club shows and exhibitions. She has a B.A. from the University of Michigan. Opal Loveland-Fearon Teaching status: Basic Skills Group Instructor Opal began figure skating as an adult at the Garden City Arena many years ago. Her training in figure skating and moves in the field was received by Barb Barski, Laurie Sitarski and Michelle Schroeder. Dance instruction was from Paul Fidel and the late Winona Bambard. Her love of this sport expands all aspects and interest. She feels a solid understanding of the basics, i.e., good posture, good stroking and proper use of the edges is key to developing a good skater. Hence, her all time favorite skater is the one and only Dorothy Hamill. Opal most enjoys passing on her love and appreciation of figure skating to young and enthusiastic skaters. Her goal is to help young skaters in developing basic skills and to have fun doing it. Yvonne Turnage-Hanson USFS Member Freestyle Figure Skater for 20 years. Tested thru USFS Intermediate Freestyle Moves in the Field. Competed Regionally on a Novice level. Skated 3 years on the Dearborn Crystallette Adult Team and competed at a National level. Currently coaching Basic Skills at the Garden City Civic Arena Angela Keller Skating for 13 years Competitive skater 11 years Still skating competitively at the Novice Level Passed Junior Moves In The Field and Novice Freestyle tests Participated and placed in the 2003 & 2007 Eastern Great Lakes Regional Championships Placed 1st in the 2006 Howard E. Co-Producer and Music Producer of Garden City’s Annual Ice Show for the past three years. Personal accomplishments: Senior level Moves in the Field, Pre-silver Dances and Junior Freestyle Tests. Participated in numerous competitions, exhibitions and ice shows over the past 15 years. Currently: Coaching Private & Basic Skills lessons, skating and training for Senior Freestyle Test. Attending Eastern Michigan University, majoring in Sports Medicine with a minor in Human Nutrition. Interests include fitness and nutrition as they apply to athletes. Tess Kuehne A USFS Member Instructor in the Basic Skills Learn to Skate program for eight years with experience teaching: Tots, Freestyle 6, Junior Club, Advanced Freestyle, Hockey, and Adult levels as well as hockey conditioning, creative stroking, conditioning (on and off-ice), stretching (off-ice), and ballet. Attended several USFS Basic Skills Instructor seminars, and passed two written Garden City Basic Skills Instructor Exams with excellent ratings. Experience choreographing programs for the annual ice show and Christmas exhibitions in addition to competition programs for private students. Private Instructor since January 2000. Current Skating level: Senior Freestyle Jolyn Lamanen A USFS & PSA Member Coaching experience: Eight years in Basic Skills, Freestyle, Moves in the Field, Hockey and on / off ice conditioning. Choreographing programs for competitive skaters. Taking competitive skaters to competitions from Tots Levels - Open Juvenile Levels. Choreographing ice show and Christmas programs for skaters. Assistant Director for the Garden City Basic Skills program from 2006-2008. Attended USFS sponsored seminars held in Dearborn, Detroit and Taylor, Michigan. Attended a Basic Skills Seminar held at Garden City Civic Arena for all Basic Skills Instructors, along with taking a written exam. Currently : Attending Eastern Michigan University to obtain a degree in Special Education. Coaching Basic Skills and private students . Kim Landis Active member of both USFS and ISI with 10 years coaching experience teaching Basic Skills, Freestyle and choreographing programs. Successfully completed USFS test levels in Senior Freestyle; Senior Moves in the Field; 5th Figure. ISI completed test levels: Freestyle 8 and Couples 6. Competed at all skating levels including Senior Freestyle. Accomplishments in other areas include: Junior National Collegiate Bronze Medalist 4 Time ISI World Championships Competitor Graduated from the University of Michigan with a Bachelor of Science in Mechanical Engineering and a Master of Science in Engineering Management. Matt M McCann Eight years of Learn to Skate Instructor experience.
